Coming Up Next

As my MAED program comes to a close it is a great time to stop and think about the future.  One thing I fully understand now after this program, education never ends.  That is a great thing!  There were so many great things that I learned along this course that have gone into making me a better teacher.  I have learned new technologies, new teaching methods, and found new colleagues to help me continue improving my education.  I also understand now where I see myself in the future in the school system.  This program has made me see how much I not only enjoy teaching but continuing to learn and I don’t see that stopping.

Technology is the way of the future and I have learned to embrace the advantages technology can offer in the classroom.  I plan to improve my use of technology in the classroom is some very easy, broad ways.  For my students it will be to add in more technology based lessons.  In the future, students no longer need to memorize facts and numbers, but learn how to use the technology around them to access this information and use it.  Second, I plan on using it to better help the parents in my classroom by starting a class webpage.  This webpage would have homework assignments, upcoming news, and a way for the parents to contact me at anytime.  Parents would then always have access to the classroom and what is going on.  Finally, this program has taught me the use of technology amongst peers.  I would like to create a tech based way for teachers in our school to contact one another through message boards.  I feel that too many times teachers are afraid to ask for help or only ask the same people for help instead at new ways of doing things.  Administrators or others could also submit articles or book suggestion for particular topics so teachers could learn for themselves.

Principal Connors.  I like the sound of that.  Two very important things that I have learned throughout my course here are 1)Teachers are the most important people in our students lives 2)A school will not thrive without solid administration.  Figuring out those two things has led me to the understanding that most of my future work will be focused on transitioning one day to administration.  I realize that I still need to learn a lot and that is what I will use as motivation.  The challenge of running a school (maybe school district one day) have focused my energy to becoming a teacher that everyone else admires and uses for their own growth.  My Urban Education Administration class here really made me look at the state of inner city schools and inspired me to one day be a person that can change and save the lives of those students.

With all the above in mind I see myself staying the classroom for the next couple of years to continue to improve my craft and knowledge.  Integrating technology, improving reading instruction, and becoming a leader amongst my colleagues are all short term goals to focus on.  When I feel I am ready, it will be back to school again to get my administration certificate and then look for a job as an assistant principal in a well managed school to learn the ins and outs of what it takes to be a principal.  Finally I can’t wait for the day that I get to make the choices to make a school high performing.

I can’t wait for this school year to start so I can get going on my goals.  This program has given me new energy as a teacher now that I have some lifelong goals I am working for.   This goals will help keep my focused, busy and most of all a lifelong learner.
